The 96th Academy Awards have been concluded and the event mainly belonged to Oppenheimer! Leading this year’s Oscars with 13 nominations, the biopic on J. Robert Oppenheimer bagged seven Oscars, including major wins in categories such as Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Director (Christopher Nolan), and Best Picture. All these mentioned categories had clear winners before the event’s commencement. However, the competition in the Best Actress category was fierce, thanks to the incredible performances of Emma Stone (Poor Things) and Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon). And the former won!
Well, Stone’s Best Actress win will certainly not sit well with many people, as they believed that Lily Gladstone deserved it more.
Stone looked shocked when Michelle Yeoh announced her name as this year’s winner. Maybe she was not expecting to win the award. This is what she said in her acceptance speech:
“Lily, I share this with you. I’m in awe of you,” Stone said during her speech.
Lily Gladstone’s nomination at this year’s Academy Awards was nothing short of a triumph. Her nomination made many people believe that she would become the first-ever Native American Oscar winner. She also received a longer and more enthusiastic response from the audience when her name was announced during the presentation than Stone. However, her hopes were thrashed by Emma Stone’s win.
Jennifer Lawrence declared Gladstone as the “Soul of Killers of the Flower Moon”. And she is not wrong. Amidst big names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, and more, Gladstone left her mark in the film with a hard-hitting and remarkable performance. She earned universal acclaim for her performance as Mollie Burkhart. Her wins at this year’s Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild strengthened her odds of winning the Best Actress Oscar. But they were not enough.
Some industry experts and viewers feared that Gladstone’s limited screen time and the story’s primary focus on Leonardo DiCaprio might adversely impact her odds against a more conventional leading performance from Emma Stone. And that’s exactly what happened!
This is how the internet has reacted to Lily Gladstone’s loss!
