Ravi K. Chandran’s ‘Bhramam’ – the Malayalam language remake of Sriram Raghavan’s cult mystery crime film ‘Andhadhun’ is all geared up for its OTT release on Amazon Prime Video on 7th October 2021. The film features proficient performer Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role of the blind (or not) pianist. ‘Bhramam’ is the second remake of ‘Andhadhun’ after the Telugu remake ‘Maestro’ that was released on the Disney+ Hotstar platform last month.
Although ‘Andhadhun’ is a modern classic in the crime films genre and a benchmark in Indian cinema and it’s virtually impossible to surpass its massive following, ‘Bhramam’ still has the potential to outshine (we dare say) ‘Andhadhun’ in not one but three filmmaking aspects:
Acting
Ayushmann Khurrana is undoubtedly a terrific actor, and he has proved his mettle time and again right from his Bollywood debut ‘Vicky Donor’ in the year 2012 and subsequently in films like ‘Article 15’, ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ and ‘Bala’. However, the acting prowess of Prithviraj Sukumaran is well known for its versatility and intensity in over 100 films from his repertoire since his debut in the year 1999.
If not better, then Prithviraj has serious potential and the experience to at least add an interesting dimension to Bhramam’s lead character. Having said that, the quality of any performance is subjective, and both these actors have their respective fan following. So, it will be interesting to observe what flavor Prithviraj will add to a dream role that was absolutely nailed by Ayushmann in ‘Andhadhun’.
Cinematography
‘Bhramam’ has been directed by Ravi K. Chandran, who is also an eminent cinematographer. Besides, of course, ‘Bhramam’, previously he had lent his photography skills in films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Black’, ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’, ‘Yuva’, ‘Ghajini’, ‘Saawariya’, and ‘The King’, to name a few. So, with Ravi K. Chandran at the helm, ‘Bhramam’ is bound to be a visual delight and might surpass ‘Andhadhun’ in this aspect.
Editing
Editing was one of the big strengths of ‘Andhadhun’ and hats-off to Sriram Raghavan’s frequent collaborator and partner-in-crime (not literally) Pooja Ladha Surti for an awesome job. On the other hand, Bhramam has been edited by the legendary film editor Sreekar Prasad, who is the winner of eight National Film Awards and two Filmfare awards.
Sreekar Prasad’s repertoire of cinematic works includes films such as ‘Vaanaprastham’, ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’, ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Yuva’, ‘Guru’, ‘Kaminey’, ‘7 Khoon Maaf’, ‘Talvar’, ‘Shershaah’, and ‘RRR’, to name a few. So, audiences can expect a deftly edited, crisp movie in ‘Bhramam’.
