Nandamuri Balakrishna‘s Akhanda hit the silver screens amid sky-high hype and anticipation. The film is on course to post excellent box office numbers on its opening day. The Boyapati Sreenu directorial is loaded with mass elements and it mainly caters to the front row audiences. Now, coming to the topic, there appears to be one major drawback for Akhanda as it eventually gears up for its OTT premieres and that could be the ‘mass overdose’.
Akhanda was always projected as a full-blooded mass entertainer and that is what the audience were served as the film hit the big screens today. Akhanda is a proper massy action thriller with trademark Boyapati Srinu elements. There is action, then there is more action, and there is even more high-octane action. This is the kind of film that is better suited for single screens. It would only be fair to say that Akhanda has all the traits that make for a big ‘no-no’ for the OTT audience.
There is a heavy duty action block for every 10-minute stretch and that doesn’t quite tick the right box for OTT. The general observation is that family audience constitutes the majority of the OTT audience. They wouldn’t prefer excessive bloodshed and too many high octane action blocks. So, Akhanda might not be best suited for the larger section of the OTT viewers.
That said, Akhanda is a big-ticket film that is carrying good hype. The film’s OTT streaming partner Disney+ Hotstar could make good use of the Balakrishna starrer at least far as the branding value goes. The film will be one of the cornerstone additions to Disney+ Hotstar’s content library. While it might make it to the top of the watchlist of the OTT crowd, it will certainly create some hungama soon after it premieres on Hotstar.
