The newly appointed head of Warner Animation Group (WAG), Bill Damaschke, has announced a rebranding of the Warner Bros’ division, focusing especially on the filmmakers. As a result, WAG will now be known as Warner Bros Pictures Animation (WBPA).
Damaschke’s intentions with Warner Bros encompass cultivating new IPs, similar to what he did during his tenure of two decades at DreamWorks Animation.
“It’s honoring the past and rich history of the company. Warner Bros Pictures Animation released movies like Iron Giant, Space Jam, Corpse Bride, Polar Express, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie — benchmark films that broke new ground, new technology, new ways of telling stories and were successful, artistically and commercially. They last in people’s hearts, every one of those films,” said Damaschke about the rebranding of WAG.
Damaschke confirmed that the rebranding process came to fruition after Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy announced to focus more on helmers and writers as part of their creative leadership. He also announced that a new Flintstones animated movie, Meet the Flintstones, is in the works at WBPA. This one will be written by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, who helmed The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
WAG’s current slate of animated projects consists of DC League of Super-Pets, Tom & Jerry, Scoob!, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. WBPA will keep these entries but will also add new animated franchises. The animation division at Warner Bros plans to theatrically release at least two animated flicks every year. Stay tuned for more updates.
