Binged Yearender: SonyLIV 2022 Report: More Hits, But Still Dull Year

It’s finally time for curtains to fall on 2022. We had innumerable movies and shows, both licensed and direct-to-digital dropping on OTT giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, SonyLIV, Disney+Hotstar etc. While some of them knocked it out of the park, most of them nose-dived.

We have compiled a list of the popular Indian titles (including originals and licensed titles) which were released on SonyLIV in the year 2022 along with their ‘Hit’ or ‘Miss’ status. ‘Hit’ implies good title acquisition while ‘Miss’ signifies not-so-good title acquisition.

Looking back to the content SonyLIV has championed in the year 2022, one could say that out of a total of 56 titles (direct-to-digital and Licensed included), there hasn’t been an evident out-performing pattern from SonyLIV.

The data shows that out of a total of 41 Originals aka Direct-to-OTT titles, hardly 24 titles were hits. This indicates that rest of the 17 titles were disappointments quality-wise or impact-wise, or both. While 7 licensed titles were disappointments, only 8 of them were actually good acquisitions by the OTT giant.

Taking a closer look, 19 films (licensed+direct-to-OTT) strike the hit status, 16 titles were colossal misses. While 13 shows proved profitable to SonyLIV, 6 of them proved to be dismally performing.

In short, SonyLIV doesn’t seem to have a consistent pattern when it comes to their titles. Neither is there a pattern where licensed titles worked better nor there is a clear hint of their original titles outperforming. But if there is one highlight, it’s that TVF content and Regional language content seems to be more on the safer side on SonyLIV.Evidently, the platform needs to put more might in getting better originals on board and also be extremely careful with the acquisition of theatricals.

Overall, there were 32 ‘Hits’ and 24 ‘Misses’ for SonyLIV in 2022 and that makes it a dull year.
SonyLIV’s success ratio for the year 2022 is : 57%.
