With an year gone by it’s time to look back, reflect and analyse how it all fared. And as you all know from the article’s title we are gonna do the same for Zee5 today. 2022 was the first year after the pandemic where everyone got a breather, especially cinemas when it comes to the entertainment industry.
This shifted the focus for OTT platforms more towards acquiring post theatrical digital rights for blockbuster films. Zee5 scored quite high on that front when it bagged digital rights for some of 2022’s biggest hits like ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘RRR’, ‘Vikram’, ‘Chup’, ‘Karthikeya 2’, ‘Yaanai’, ‘Dharmaveer’ and more.
Zee5 also made progress on getting the streaming rights for acclaimed titles that received high praise despite doing average or above average at the box office. These include films like ‘Jhund’, ‘Valimai’, ‘Bimbisara’, ‘Window Seat’, ‘Kaari’, ‘Ini Utharam’, ‘Itlu Maredumilli Prajaneekam’, ‘Gaalipata 2’, ‘Sohreyan da Pind aa Gaya’, ‘Timepass 3’, ‘Paappan’, ‘Khuda Haafiz Chapter 2 Agni Pariksha’, ‘Vikrant Rona’, ‘Veetla Vishesham’, ‘Janhit Mein Jaari’, ‘Keedam’, ‘Zombivli’, and more.
Zee5 also had a number of direct-to-digital release films like ‘India Lockdown’, ‘Blurr’, ‘Tadka’, ‘Forensic’, ‘Ardh’, ‘Kinnerasani’, ‘Love Hostel’, ‘36 Farmhouse’ etc.
Apart form all these above mentioned titles in all the categories there were many which did not work at all. Films like ‘Captian’, ‘Attack’, ‘Rowdy Boys’, ‘Dhaakad’, ‘Radhe Shyam’, ‘Rashtra Kavach Om’, ‘Macherla Niyojakvargam’, ‘Coffee with Kadhal’ and so did not perform anywhere for anyone and were a waste of resources for Zee5.
Coming to web series, Zee5 had quite a many in its kitty across multiple languages this year such as ‘Kaun Banegi Shikarawati’, ‘Loser’ S2, ‘Mithya’, ‘Vilangu’, ‘Sutliyan’, ‘Bloody Brothers’, ‘Abhay’ S3, ‘Gaalivaana’, ‘Khatta Meetha’, ‘Anantham’, ‘Never Kiss Your Best Friend’ S2, ‘The Broken News’, ‘Recce’, ‘Fingertip’ S2, ‘Saas Bahu Achaar Pvt. Ltd.’, ‘Maa Neella Tank’, ‘Paper Rocket’, ‘Rangbaaz’ S3, ‘Hello World’, ‘Duranga’, ‘Tripling’ S3, ‘Mukhbir: The Story of a Spy’, ‘Aha Na Pellanta’, ‘Five, Six, Seven, Eight’, ‘Pitchers’ S2 and more.
Overall, it was a good year for Zee5, not just in terms of quantity but also quality. There was something to look forward to almost each month but it was the summer of 2022 that proved to be the best for Zee5.
