Netflix India made some remarkable progress in 2022. By the end of the year, they seemed to improve a lot in the shows they were offering. But as we welcome 2023, it is important to see how well Netflix paid you back for your subscription fee.
Important original series from the year was Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein, The Fame Game, She Season 2, Jamtara Season 2, Delhi Crime Season 2, Khakee The Bihar Chapter, and more.
The original film’s slate was smaller but Thar, Monica, O My Darling, Darlings, and Qala made some impact.
The most remarkable achievement in originals was the consistent and well-made crime documentary series Indian Predator whose 4 seasons came this year itself.
Also, specials like Ranveer Vs Wild, The Elephant Whisperers, Kapil Sharma: I Am Not Done Yet and Vir Das Landing was a bonus.
But, the year belongs to licensed films. There is no doubt that right from beginning to end, consistent crowd attraction on Netflix were films that came after a theatrical run.
Shyam Singha Roy, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Kantara: A Legend, Jana Gana Mana, and especially the mammoth RRR. These films were always to be seen somewhere in the trending list of the platform.
In the second half of the year, Netflix India gave some really good series. Khakee: The Bihar Chapter was received well by the masses and Delhi Crime Season 2 was almost perfect in terms of its execution.
But were they crowd-pullers? We don’t think so.
Because only two series made it to the global list of non-English TV shows in the whole year. The first one was Madhuri Dixit’s The Fame Game and then Khakee The Bihar Chapter.
But all year long, one or two licensed films kept trending globally and it was the biggest factor in Netflix’s social media popped notifications.
After all, we can’t name any original that was even half as successful as RRR or Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Thus, there were bumps of highs and lows but Netflix must be a lot more original.
