The year 2021 has witnessed many fine OTT film titles of the likes of ‘Drishyam 2’, ‘Minnal Murali’, ‘Sherni’, ‘Malik’, ‘Narappa’, Sarpatta Parambarai’, ‘Sardar Udham’, and ‘Jai Bhim’, amongst others. On the other hand, there have also been movies that didn’t click with OTT audiences. For this article, we have compiled a list of ten such films that were released directly on OTT platforms but were unable to garner similar acclaim.
Bhoomi (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
A story set amidst the backdrop of agriculture, the film follows a NASA astronaut Bhoominathan who is all set for an important mission to Mars. Before that, he visits his drought-affected village in Tamil Nadu and decides to help the villagers from the clutches of a powerful corporate. Binged rating: 1.5/5.
Udanpirappe (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
The film features acclaimed actress Jyothika as a doting wife Mathangi to her law-abiding schoolteacher husband (Samuthirakani) and a loving sister to her hot-headed but well-intentioned brother (M. Sasikumar). Considering the vast ideological differences between the two disparate people she cares for, will Mathangi ever be able to unite the families? Binged rating: 2/5.
The Girl on the Train (Streaming on Netflix)
Based on Paula Hawkins’ book of the same name, the mystery thriller movie features Parineeti Chopra as an alcoholic divorcee who gets entangled in a murder case while on the way to her usual train commute to work. Despite Parineeti Chopra’s earnest performance, the film wasn’t able to impress many viewers. Binged rating: 2/5.
Shaadisthan (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
The film is a musical drama that follows the bumpy misadventures of a family traveling by road from Mumbai to a family wedding function in Ajmer along with a music band. The film features Nivedita Bhattacharya, Kirti Kulhari, and Kay Kay Menon, amongst others. Binged rating: 1.75/5.
Netrikann (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
A remake of a South Korean movie called ‘Blind’, the film revolves around a former cop Durga (Nayanthara), and her cat-and-mouse game with a serial killer after she becomes a witness in a kidnapping case involving the same serial killer, who becomes obsessed with the woman. Binged rating: 1.75/5.
Annabelle Sethupathi (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
‘Annabelle Sethupathi’ is a comedy fantasy horror movie that’s written and directed by debutante director Deepak Sundarrajan. The film’s plot follows a family of thieves including Rudra (Taapsee Pannu) who are sent to live in a palace haunted by ghosts, in order to test the place’s safety before selling. Thereafter, Rudra begins to unravel the mystery about a woman named Anabelle Sethupathi. Binged Rating: 1.75/5.
Dybbuk (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
‘Dybbuk’ is the Hindi language remake of the 2017 supernatural horror Malayalam movie ‘Ezra’. The film’s plot follows a newly married woman who brings an antique Jewish box to her home and after which the couple begins to experience paranormal phenomena. Eventually, they get to know that the box is actually a dybbuk that’s possessed with an evil spirit. The film features Emraan Hashmi, Nikita Dutta, and Manav Kaul and is directed by Jay K.
Jagame Thandiram (Streaming on Netflix)
This Tamil action thriller movie features the supremely talented actor Dhanush in the lead role. Helmed by Karthik Subbaraj, the underlying story revolves around a smart but easy-going gangster Suruli, who runs a restaurant in Madurai but is caught in a fight between two rival gangsters. Binged Rating: 2/5.
Squad (Streaming on Zee5)
Helmed by Nilesh Sahai, ‘Squad’ is an action thriller movie that features Rinzing Denzongpa (son of veteran actor Danny Denzongpa), Malvika Raaj, Pooja Batra, Mohan Kapur, and Dishita Jain. Rinzing Denzongpa plays an STF commando whose mission is to protect an eminent scientist’s 6-year-old granddaughter, who is being chased by the world’s best special forces.
Hum Bhi Akele Tum Bhi Akele (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
The film featuring Anshuman Jha and Zareen Khan, generally failed to impress the viewers and critics alike, despite its lead performances being appreciated. The plot centers around an unexpected road trip journey from New Delhi to Himanchal involving a runaway groom and a runaway bride. Binged Rating: 1.25/5.
