2022 is coming to an end and we’ve had some great Indian films which decided to forego theatrical release due to the unpredictable market or due to the mere fact that some of these movies were made for the digital audience. Here’s our pick for the top 10 Indian movies this year on OTT:
10. Bhoothakaalam(Malayalam)- SonyLiv
Following the death of a family member, a mother(Revathi) and son(Shane Nigam) experience mysterious events which distort their sense of reality and make them question their sanity. A must-watch, the film is one of the few well-written ones in its genre.
9. Darlings(Hindi)- Netflix
Hamza(Vijay Varma) and Badru’s(Alia Bhatt) love marriage takes an ugly turn when he turns into an abusive and alcoholic husband. However, when his behaviour leads to a tragedy, she sets off to seek revenge. Watch out for Shefali Shah, the show-stealer with her nuanced expressions. Raking in huge numbers on Netflix, Darlings is worth all the hype.
8. Monica, O My Darling(Hindi)- Netflix
A young man(Rajkumar Rao) desperately tries to make it big with some unlikely allies and a dastardly diabolical plan to pull off the perfect murder. Having an ensemble cast including Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte, this neo-noir crime comedy is a love letter to Hindi cinema.
7. Appan(Malayalam)- SonyLiv
Njoonju’s(Sunny Wayne) father Ittychan(Alencier Lopez), is a narcissistic, cruel womanizer who harasses, abuses, and tortures his wife, Kuttyamma and Njoonju despite being bedridden. Suffering all this, his family members await his death.
6. Taanakkaran(Tamil)- Hotstar
Arivu(Vikram Prabhu) and his trainee friends face the wrath of a ruthless police officer, Eshwaramurthy(Lal). However, this strict inspector plots various schemes to demotivate and punish the entire batch. Also starring Anjali Nair, Madhusudhan Rao, Livingston, and M. S. Bhaskar in supporting roles, the film is based on real-life incidents from 1997 related to police training.
5. Qala(Hindi)- Netflix
Haunted by her past, a talented singer(Tripti Dimri) with a rising career copes with the pressure of success, a mother’s disdain and the voices of doubt within her. Another triumphant venture from the team behind Netflix’s ‘Bulbbul’, every scene of the film is a painting in motion.
4. Freedom Fight(Malayalam)- SonyLiv
Freedom Fight is a Malayalam-language anthology film directed by a team of directors including Jeo Baby( The Great Indian Kitchen), Kunjila Mascillamani, Jithin Issac Thomas, Akhil Anilkumar, and Francies Louis. The movie is based on five stories, each story reveals the necessity of freedom for different individuals in society.
3. Paka(Malayalam)- SonyLiv
Paka(River of Blood) is a tale of a river that swells with the blood of two feuding families and a young couple that tries to overcome this hatred with their love. Produced by Raj Rachakonda and Anurag Kashyap, the film starring Basil Paulose, Vinitha Koshy, and Nithin George had a great run at international events before its release on Indian OTT.
2. Ariyippu(Malayalam)- Netflix
Hareesh(Kunchako Boban) and Reshmi(Divya Prabha), an immigrant couple from Kerala working in a medical gloves factory near Delhi, aspire to go abroad for a better life. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, when an old video resurfaces among the factory workers, it opens up Pandora’s box that threatens the couple’s jobs and marriage.

Titled ‘Aavasavyuham: The Arbit Documentation of An Amphibian Hunt’, the science fiction film will remind you of the DC comics character Swamp Thing. The movie shows Joy, a man who seems to have a mysterious connection with nature. One day he arrives in Puthuvype, and the people there recount stories about him.
