The OTT industry in the year 2021 has seen its share of hits and misses. And the same is applicable to sequels for films and series alike. While there have been some brilliantly executed sequels like ‘The Family Man’ Season 2 and ‘Kota Factory’ Season 2, there have also been some sequels that were unable to meet their predecessor’s standards or audience expectations, thereby lending it an unnecessary vibe. We have compiled a list of five unnecessary sequels released on OTT in 2021.
Illegal Season 2 (Streaming on Voot)
The show continues the story arc of idealistic lawyer Niharika Singh (played by Neha Sharma). The new season narrates her struggles after establishing her own law firm with Puneet (Satyadeep Mishra) and facing the formidable hurdle – her former mentor and aspiring CM – Janardhan Jaitley (Piyush Mishra). Binged bottom-line: A dumb and silly second season. Binged rating: 5/10.
Engineering Girls Season 2 (Streaming on Zee5)
Set in an engineering college, the series follows the three protagonists Maggu, Sabu, and Kiara, who are now in their fourth and last year of their college and have to deal with their career problems. Binged bottom-line: old wine, old bottle. Binged rating: 4.5/10.
Gandii Baat Season 6 (Streaming on Zee5, ALT Balaji)
Coincidentally, Gandi Baat Season 5 was also present in our last year’s list. The show narrates scintillating stories and murder mysteries in an erotic thriller format. An interesting genre blend albeit with an unexciting result for the latest season. Binged bottom-line: More absurd than ‘Gandii’. Binged rating: 3/10.
Hungama 2 (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
A spiritual sequel to the 2003 film ‘Hungama’ and helmed by veteran director Priyadarshan, the romantic comedy-of-errors movie that follows the chaos after a girl named Vaani suddenly appears in the life of Aakash, who is about to get hitched to his family friend’s daughter. The family enlists the help of a well-wisher (Shilpa Shetty) with a suspicious husband (Paresh Rawal). Binged bottom-line: bland and outdated comedy. Binged rating: 2/5.
Qubool Hai 2.0 (Streaming on Zee5)
The Qubool Hai sequel revolves around the story of an Indian rifle shooter Asad (Karan Singh Grove) and a Pakistani girl Zoya (Surbhi Jyoti) who meet by a twist of fate and thereafter their lives get entangled with each other’s resulting in a romantic relationship. Binged bottom-line: an intolerable, ridiculous espionage drama. Binged rating: 1.5/10.
