Streaming has taken over the way Indian viewers consume entertainment these days. And year 2023 proved to be a gamechanger for the still-evolving OTT domain in India. More people than ever took to digital entertainment, like fish takes to water – the young, the old, the North viewers, the South audiences, English show lovers, Hindi entertainment enthusiasts and even regional content takers.
In the midst of all the frenzy on streaming, several OTT content creators stood out among the rest in the country. They produced OTT content with astonishing speed, and good content at that. Streaming platforms witnessed record views for hit Indian shows, all on the back of these stellar OTT content creators.
As our next Binged Yearender, we’ve listed the Top OTT content creators in the country.
Here are the Top 5 –
5. RSVP Movies –
Ronnie Screwvala’s production company, RSVP Movies, had a sizeable number of releases on streaming this year. Of course, none were super hits, which is the reason why they are at number 5 in our list of Top content creators in OTT in India. They had the Ishaan Khatter starrer Pippa on Prime Video India this year, along with Tumse Na Ho Payega on Disney Plus Hotstar, Siddharth Malhotra’s Mission Majnu on Netflix, Tarla on ZEE5 and finally, Lust Stories 2 on Netflix. A good slate, overall.
4. Roy Kapur Films
Roy Kapur had one big hit in the form of the popular Sony LIV show, ‘Rocket Boys Season 2’. It also had two decent performers in Prime Video’s war drama ‘Pippa’ and the coming-of-age movie ‘Tumse Na Ho Payega’ on Disney Plus Hotstar. Roy Kapur Films is hence at #4 on our list of top OTT content creators of 2023.
3. Emmay Entertainment –
Nikhil Advani’s Emmay Entertainment has two big web hits this year, in the form of Sony LIV’s Rocket Boys Season 2 and Prime Video’s Mumbai Diaries Season 2. Other than these, the production house had the average series Adhura on Prime Video, and flop movie ‘Dry Day’ on the same platform. The two hit series are enough to catapult it to the #3 content creators in OTT entertainment in India.
2. The Viral Fever –
The Viral Fever has been as prolific as they’ve been, year after year. With more than 12 shows on various streaming platforms, they’ve been churning out shows left, right and center. But not every TVF series managed to hit the mark with viewers. While Aspirants Season 2 (Prime Video) and Sandeep Bhaiya (YouTube) were hits, the rest were just about average, including Half CA (YouTube) Humorously Yours Season 3 (ZEE5), The Aam Aadmi Family Season 3 (ZEE5), S K Sir Ki Class (YouTube), Sapne Vs Everyone, (YouTube), ImMature Season 3 (Prime Video), Permanent Roommates Season 3 (Prime Video), Shantit Kranti Season 2 (Sony LIV) and Hostel Daze Season 4 (Prime Video). Yeh Meri Family Season 2 (Amazon miniTV) and Flames Season 4 (Prime Video) were downright flops, with barely any viewers appreciating the two sequels to well-loved shows. Nevertheless, The Viral Fever is one of the topmost content creators in streaming entertainment, and at second place on our list for 2023, slipping one spot from its numero uno place from 2022.
And the winner is….
1. Excel Entertainment
Everything that Excel Entertainment touched this year turned to gold. Sonakshi Sinha’s web debut ‘Dahaad’ on Prime Video garnered rave reviews and ample views. Made In Heaven Season 2 on Prime Video India was a hit too. Gangster drama Bambai Meri Jaan, again on Prime Video, was an unequivocal success. Movie ‘Friday Night Plan’ on Netflix was a sweet little gem. Excel Entertainment ended the year in style with its superhit blockbuster film, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan. That’s a rare 100% score – a dream for any production house. So yes, Excel Entertainment is the undisputed leader of OTT entertainment this year, and the deserving #1 of 2023!
