2022 comes to an end and it’s that time of the year when we retrospect on the year that was, with regards to the Indian entertainment industry. 2022 is a year that saw monstrous cinematic hits such as RRR and KGF Chapter 2; money-spinners such as Brahmastra, Kantara, and Vikram; critically acclaimed darlings like Chup: Revenge Of The Artist and PS1; and finally, huge disappointments such as Cobra, Beast, Laal Singh Chaddha, Samrat Prithviraj and the recent addition Cirkus.
While 2022 saw theatres coming back to full glory during certain releases and sometimes nose-diving during other releases, it was ultimately a thing of beauty to witness the theatrical industry rising out of doomsday, after the Covid-induced drought at the cinemas.
However, in the flurry of releases, one wonders which production house in Kollywood walked away with the crown of glory, both as per the bottom line, as well as the quality of films.
Let’s see –
We researched into the most prolific and best Kollywood production houses, went into the nitty-gritty of their releases this year — both the ones they produced, and the ones they distributed — and finally got our winner – ‘The Top Production House In Kollywood In 2022’.
We found the following –
Dream Warrior Pictures produced OTT film O2,Vattam and critical hit Oke Oka Jeevitham. While they distributed monstrous hits Kantara and KGF 2.
Red Giant Movies only produced one hit film Kalaga Thalaivan, while it distributed hit films like FIR, Etharkkum Thunindhavan, Don, Kaathuvakkula Rendu Kadhal, Thiruchitrambalam, Vendhu Thanindathu Kaadu, Sardar, Gatta Kusthi and monstrous hits like Vikram, PS-1 and Love Today. They also distributed mega duds like Cobra, Beast, Radhe Shyam etc.
Lyca Productions on the other hand bankrolled blockbusters like Don, PS-1, alongside OTT film Good Luck Jerry. The production house also produced flops like Panni Kutty, Ram Setu, Naai Sekar Returns, and Pattathu Arasan. On the distribution front, they had blockbusters like RRR and Sita Ramam.
Sun Pictures produced and distributed Etharkkum Thunindhavan and Beast. While the former was a hit, Beast was a huge dud. They also produced Thiruchitrambalam which was a sleeper hit.
Raj Kamal Films produced one of the biggest hits of the year Vikram, while not stretching itself in the distribution department.
Apart from PS-1 Madras Talkies did not produce any other title this year.
Going by all of the above, it is proved beyond doubt that Lyca Productions deserves the title of ‘The Top Production House In Kollywood In 2022’.
