In a bizarre turn of events, an armed man in Ukraine who held 13 people hostage surrendered to the police only after his one demand was met – The President of Ukraine endorses Joaquin Phoenix’s 2005 film ‘Earthlings’.
The hours-long stand-off finally came to an end after the 44 year old man, Maksym Kryvosh, captured a bus and called for dozens of government officials to admit being ”terrorists”.
During the capture, Kryvosh was armed with automatic rifles and grenades which he used during the hostage capture at the police drones and opened fire as well. Although no one was seriously injured there were reports of one bullet almost striking the national chief of police.
President Voloymyr Zelenskiy spoke directly to the gunman after which three of the hostages were released and later when the President posted a short video online recommending people to watch the Joaquin Phoenix film.
The video was deleted shortly after the gunman was arrested and a note thanking policemen and others who helped replaced it saying, “Human life is the most important value. We have not lost anyone.”
Later the Ukrainian Interior Minister even said, “The film … is a good one. And you don’t have to be so screwed up and cause such a horror for the whole country – you can watch it without that.”
Now that’s one way to get the country’s attention, that’s for sure!
