After almost two months of release, Black Adam’s future in the DCU is finally out officially. Taking to social media to inform the fans, Rock himself revealed that the movie will not mark the new chapter for the DCU as promised.
Before Gunn and Safron took reins of the DCU, it was Rock Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’ that was looked upon to mark a new chapter for the studio. The movie’s success would have meant that Black Adam would become a central character in the DCU and not just Shazam’s nemesis. Well, the change in supremos at DCU and the film’s box office performance was indication enough that the movie would not be the reboot that DCU was waiting for.
Made on a budget of around $190M-$260M, the movie could only gross around $390M. Fans had come to expect the worst for the character’s future in the DCU for the last few weeks, but the news saddens nonetheless, considering what an entertaining popcorn flick Black Adam was. From introducing the Justice Society to showing us Henry Cavill’s Superman once more on-screen, the film has some great moments.
Here is Rock’s official address to fans and their reactions:

Just want to say that regardless of the Hollywood stuff, it was still inspiring to see you make your passion project happen after 15 years of working on it.

This is in no way the end for the character. The newly rebranded DCU Studios is looking at exploring Black Adam more in its multiverse chapters. This is a small piece of good news amidst all the major unpopular decisions the studio is taking. It is rumoured that the upcoming ‘The Flash’ would be officially introducing the multiverse into the DCU. If it is indeed true, then we may be seeing Black Adam sooner than we think in the DCU.
While Gunn is agitating people, it is to be understood that developing a whole new chapter of an already prominent comic book universe is no mean feat. It would mean making difficult choices, and while all of this may look hell right now, the best thing now is to have trust in Gunn. After all, the man did make a movie about a goofy thief, a green assassin, a racoon and a talking tree, a multimillion-dollar film franchise, with its third movie voted as the most anticipated movie of the year! It will be a rocky road(sigh!) but if anyone can do that, it may be him.
