Tovino starrer ‘Thallumaala‘ was released on Netflix on September 11. The theatrical blockbuster is now getting mixed reviews from the audience after its release on OTT.
Thallumaala is not the usual feel-good film the country has been expecting from the Malayalam Film Industry. It is an experimental film and was one of those films many expected to do good in OTT where experiments are appreciated. Many doubted its box office draw, despite having a huge star cast and a reputed director (Khalid Rahman).
The actual response is instead a surprise. Becoming Tovino’s biggest hit so far and having a glorious run at the box office, the movie is one of Mollywood’s highest grossers. It was hailed as a ‘trippy’ big screen spectacle and created waves in the theatres. The film, however, has received mixed reviews from the OTT audience.
Though the film’s technical quality and performances were praised, some opine it lacked a good story and had unwanted songs. The film has been called disappointing, bland, its non-linear narrative confusing, and lacking substance. Some even said the makers should have paid their screenwriters more than their action choreographers.
‘Thallumaala’ has been dubbed by Netflix into Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. This is a good step catering to the audience who prefers remakes and dubbed versions over the original with subtitles. Whether the film’s availability in other languages affects its remake potential is another question that has many thinking, considering the box office failures of remakes as of late.
With brilliantly choreographed action scenes and innovative direction and production quality, irrespective of the mixed reviews, ‘Thallumaala’ is an unusual film, definitely worth a watch.
