Tiger Shroff’s upcoming action thriller, Ganapath: Part 1 has been announced on multiple social media platforms and is expected to release next year, in 2022 in theaters before making its way for online streaming and television via Netflix and SonyMax respectively. The leading lady for this movie has also been announced a few hours ago – the Heropanti actor, Kriti Sanon. The posters featuring both actors have come out and Bollywood fans all over have been going slightly stir-crazy over the announcements. But with the addition of “Part 1” to the title, we are effectively expecting, at the very least, another sequel for a film that is only going to be released next year.
Many Indian movie fans might have noticed that many upcoming films such as Adipurush, Brahmastra and now Ganapath are going to have additional sequels. This rising trend of creating franchise movies is one way to keep fans interested in watching megastars on screen, with the same storyline in place. This could be the Indian production houses’ way of copying Marvel and other Hollywood production companies/ studios who have regularly used sequels as a way to milk money in the global market, but this turn most likely is the result of the global impact made by the Telugu masterpieces Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
This new idea of sequels is a refreshing change to the old-school three and a half hour Indian film format especially for action films (not counting the semi-defunct heist film franchise Dhoom) and this will hopefully help writers flesh out better characters for the movies. This will also (hopefully) reduce unwanted time constraints and will help the storytellers in telling better stories.
This will also attract a lot more global viewers, just like Bahubali, and the Indian film makers are in prime position to angle for the global market. As one of the oldest and richest film industries in the world, all the Indian film industry needs is a good story, and that is what we can find in the aforementioned, upcoming, three film franchises. They just need to be delivered in a way that (not just the Indian market, but) the Global market will take notice.
