BookMyShow Stream, the pioneering paid video-on-demand (PVOD) platform from ticketing website Book My Show, has a new offering for binge-watchers. The platform, which has brought trending movies from around the world for Indian viewers, is all set to stream TV shows for fans of global content. The new introduction is under the category of BMS Originals.
BookMyShow Stream launched bang in the middle of the lockdown. As Covid-19 restricted everyone indoors, people all over the world, including in India, took to OTT platforms to get their daily dose of entertainment. In their search for quality entertainment, they didn’t mind shelling out a couple of hundreds on paid video on demand (PVOD) platforms to watch films that weren’t available on regular subscription-based OTT platforms.
The premiere of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on PVOD helped the concept to take off in India with the right gusto. The film debuted on HBO Max in the US, which is not available in India. BookMyShow Stream made a killing with the film. Hundreds of Indian viewers paid to watch Justice League: Snyder Cut on BookMyShow Stream. Similarly, several other HBO Max films did good business in India on the platform.
Just like unavailable movies, Indian viewers don’t have access to numerous buzzy TV shows from around the world. BBC shows ‘Gangs Of London’, ‘We Are Lady Parts’, ‘EastEnders’, among others; HBO Max shows ‘Hacks’, ‘The Flight Attendant’; Hulu shows ‘The Great’, ‘Godfather Of Harlem’, are just some of the current shows not available to watch on any Indian platform as of now. Similarly, there are a huge number of slightly older shows that have finished their run that are still not available to watch in India. French spy show ‘The Bureau’, widely acclaimed as the best spy show of all time, is the prime example of this anomaly.
With its soon-to-be-introduced feature of streaming shows on demand under ‘BMS Originals’, we sincerely hope BookMyShow Stream addresses this dearth of good TV shows available to stream in India. It’s good for raising content standards, good for competitive streaming, and great for the Indian digital viewer.
