Ayan Mukerji’s super ambitious cinematic venture ‘Brahmastra: Part One Shiva’ was finally released in theatres last Friday on 9th September and the film has grossed around Rs.270 crores at the box office worldwide. The film’s underlying premise has its roots in ancient India and revolves around powerful weapons known as astras, which were also an important part of the two major Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Another eagerly anticipated Indian film ‘Ram Setu’ starring Akshay Kumar is set to release this Diwali on 24th October. And like ‘Brahmastra’, ‘Ram Setu’ is also related to ancient India because the film’s plot has a direct connection with Ramayana. The plotline follows an archaeologist (played by Akshay Kumar), who wants to find out whether the Rama Setu bridge is a myth or reality.
Since ‘Brahmastra’ is doing well until now at the box office in India and in other countries like the US, the encouraging numbers have paved the way and set the right momentum and overall audience sentiment for Ram Setu’s theatrical release.
And it’s not just ‘Brahmastra’ which has given a solid platform for Ram Setu’s theatrical release. Because the success of the highly rated Telugu language Indian adventure thriller ‘Karthikeya 2’, which is set in the ancient city of Dwarka and has elements of Indian mythology, should also help ‘Ram Setu’ getting accepted by cinephiles, owing to their common ancient India-centric themes.
As of now, the Hindi film industry is reeling under the pressure of a string of commercially unsuccessful films like ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, ‘Prithviraj’, and ‘Raksha Bandhan’. However, the successes of ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘Karthikeya 2’ have given a ray of hope for a rather similarly themed ambitious film like ‘Ram Setu’ – to make an impact on movie going audiences. It seems that Indian audiences are hungry for content driven films whose plot comprises elements of Indian mythology and gives them a sneak-peek into ancient India. And Akshay Kumar’s ‘Ram Setu’ might just be that film.
