Due to the humongous budget of the film, Brahmastra Part 1- Shiva may not be as big a success as was expected, but the enormous numbers it did on the weekend domestically and abroad is proof that the content has worked.
Social media is filled with all sorts of theories by fans as to why things happened the way they did. It is already a solid pop culture sensation and in these times, that is badly needed for Bollywood. This theatrical success and curiosity for Part 2 has empowered makers into planning their own retellings of the Indian epics and guaranteed the makers who had already announced such epics that such movies are indeed connecting with the audience. For a lot of them, ‘Brahmastra’ was the litmus test.
There were reports that producer Ronnie Screwvala of RSVP was waiting for the reaction towards Brahmastra to decide on increasing the budget of his already announced mythological film ‘The Immortal Ashwatthama’; Adipurush, the 500cr magnum opus is going forward more sure-footed as its promotions will start from October 3rd, 2022.
There is a slate of films announced which are all deeply rooted in Indian history, like Madhu Mandena’s Ramayana Trilogy (led by Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Singh, and Deepika Padukone) and Draupadi( starring Deepika Padukone), and Kangana Ranaut’s The Incarnation: Sita amongst others.
Disney themselves announced a few days back a big-budget web series based on the epic Mahabharatha.
Two new rumors include Feroz Nadiadwala’s big-budget film adaptation of Mahabharat and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film adaptation of mythological epic ‘Karna’ to be made in two parts with Farhan Akhtar as its producer. If these two reports are also genuine, Brahmastra may be the catalyst of something that will change the landscape of the Indian Film Industry forever.
Makers are now looking to our rich past and heritage for inspiration instead of half-baked remakes and films with cliche storylines. Producers are willing to risk it big and are more ambitious. Actors are willing to dedicate years to a big project, something many of them would not have done a few years ago.
The cinema industry may have stumbled and fell, but we are rising again, only better than before. May this truly be the start of something wonderful. This may be too big a dream but done right, all these projects will usher the film industry to its brightest era.
