Josh Brolin was recently offered the role of Hal Jordan in the James Gunn DCU. However, the Mad Titan promptly declined the role of the emerald space cop. But he was not the only one in the race; along with him were the likes of Matthew McCouhney, Chris Pine, and even Ewan McGreggor. This was quite peculiar. The comic Hal Jordan has always been a pilot in his prime; then why does Gunn want an older actor to play Hal Jordan?
This could mean a number of things. Starting off with the DCU’s status as a universe already inhabited by a number of metahumans. We are not seeing the onset of the universe, like it was with the MCU. Which explains why an older Jordan already on duty makes sense. Furthermore, the eight-episode series “Lanterns” has a premise that can serve as the “passing the torch” scenario in favor of a younger recruit. This can be anyone like Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and the fan favorite John Stewart or even Kyle Rayner.
Perhaps the coolest plot point this can touch upon is the Parallax storyline. When Hal Jordan gets possessed by the Yellow Fear Entity and goes on an insane murder spree. The old and battered Hal Jordan might just be one defeat away before his willpower breaks. And he just gives in to the dark side.
It is quite disappointing for some that Brolin has passed the opportunity. However, the infancy of DCU gives it enough room to make adjustments. Which gives it ample opportunity to pick up new stories to tell. Only time will tell what The Lanterns has in store for us.
