At last! The end is here. We knew this was coming, but didn’t want to face reality. The final two episodes of the hit comedy series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, will drop in two days, on September 16th 2021, thereby ending its 8-year run on air. While the 8th season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine hasn’t dropped in India (and in multiple other countries) yet, the release of the series’ one-hour season finale will be felt around the globe.
The series had initially been cancelled after its fifth season by FOX, which then got picked up months later by NBC after many celebrities rallied behind the public outcry against the show’s cancellation. It worked and we got three more seasons out of it, with the show talking about more and more important social issues as such as racism, LGBTQ acceptance, corruption and much more.
The 8th and final season of the web series has tackled a much more sensitive and major issue – abuse of police power. Police brutality, corruption within the different tiers of government, bureaucratic failings, social reforms are the main topics on focus in this final season. With Brooklyn Nine-Nine being the last, internationally watched cop comedy series to still air and remain popular (especially within the U.S.), it is going to be a hard series to follow up. Especially in Hollywood, where most of the general public have lost faith in their police.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine offered levity on various serious subject matters and helped us to process many important social issues with a calm head. Now, with its end, we might not get a show like that for a while – a show which has even captured the attention of the Dalai Lama.
The first seven seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine can be streamed on Netflix.
