Can Animation Be the Next Big Thing in the OTT Landscape?

I guess you might already be tired of hearing the same statement again and again as to how more and more people of the younger generation are getting on streaming platforms and ditching the mainstream formats such as theatres and T.V. This has made us perceive several genres in a different light but I feel that one genre that is vastly underutilised is animation. It is one of those that has a bright future.

While OTT platforms may have enjoyed a free reign and a diverse range of content on its platforms, its continuous tussles with several organizations across the country for the kind of content that it is streaming has come under some heavy flak. Many legal notices have already been sent to the creators of these shows. With the responsibility of their regulation coming under the Broadcast Ministry, things only seem to get much more confusing.

Animation can grow in leaps and bounds as many platforms have dedicated spaces for kids, but apart from Netflix, no one has gone deep and tried to harness the potential that it has. Amazon prime has just released the Tom and Jerry movie, which shows that it understands the importance of this niche.

As someone who grew up in the 90s with a wide range of fantastic cartoon shows, I feel really sad about the generic and mostly boring cartoons made today. (I swear I won’t turn this into a rant). They say that opportunity lies amid adversity. Though there may be a certain uneasiness about the kind of content that will be allowed, Animated series or shows revolving around quirky topics can be an excellent avenue to explore.

As the millennial generation is slowly moving towards becoming parents (Please don’t hate me for this), I believe that this can be good as they can relive their nostalgia and would want their children to watch better shows than those currently airing on T.V.
