Can Chhorii Rejuvenate The Horror Genre In India?

After the release of Chhorii on Amazon prime, audiences and critics are appreciating it. Not only the new kind of horror but the performance of Nushrratt Bharuccha attracted major attention. It made us remember the late 2000s to early 2010s.

In that period, especially after the release of 1920, we saw an explosion in the horror genre. The movies and the horror elements in it got saturated very soon and people started rejecting horror films. Upside down walking ghosts, creaking doors and unnecessary intimate scenes became boring more than horrific.

Other than Emraan Hashmi, no big name from the industry ever wanted to act in horror films. Reason being, they couldn’t afford to show themselves getting scared on screen.

But after the OTT revolution, things are changing. Now the genre is not only limited to Vikram Bhatt as more and more directors are stepping into creating horror movies and series. Series like Betaal or Ghost Stories on Netflix failed to grab much attention.

On the other hand Bulbull, Pari, Tumbbad are getting greatly appreciated. Even the latest release Chhorii is gaining attention and appreciation from the public. Horror comedy is evolving as a genre and more people are getting interested into it.

Thankfully Bollywood is noticing this and they recently announced Phone Bhoot starring Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan Khatter.

If Chhorii succeeds in accelerating this revolution then we might see some interesting horror films and series that are actually horrific and not horrible.
