Zee5 has been vying for a breakthrough hit in its original content slate for a long time now. It’s most recent outing ‘Logout’ a cyber-thriller starring Babil Khan, tackled social media addiction and was very much relevant in today’s time where digital obsession is on the rise but unfortunately the platform failed to cash in on that opportunity big time.
Now, Zee5 pins its hopes on Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer ‘Costao’, a biographical crime drama set to premiere tomorrow on May 1, 2025. Could this gritty tale of a Goan customs officer be the breakthrough Zee5 needs?
‘Costao’ follows the story of Costao Fernandes, a 1990s customs officer who battled gold smugglers and corruption in Goa. Directed by Sejal Shah, the film promises a blend of action, emotion, and authenticity, and is backed by Siddiqui’s nuanced portrayal.
From the looks of it ‘Costao’ has some great strong points like Siddique’s wide star appeal, a compelling true-life narrative, and high production values capturing Goa’s gritty underbelly. Moreover, the film’s universal themes of sacrifice and courage could spark the buzz Zee5 is craving highly right now.
Yet, challenges loom. May 2025 brings fierce competition from global players like Netflix, Prime Video and Jio Hotstar who have The Royals, Gram Chikitsalay and Criminal Justice – A Family Matter, set to debut soon on respective platforms. Given their stronger hold amongst the digital audience, Zee5 will have to sustain momentum for ‘Costao’ to be successful. Also, if it turns out to be good, word of mouth will do the job afterwords.
‘Costao’ has the ingredients to redefine Zee5’s trajectory, there’s a stellar lead, a gripping story, and polished execution. If it cuts through the noise, it could prove Zee5 has still got it in it.
