Can Drishyam 2’s New Addition Act as a Dampener for the Sequel?

Soon after the official trailer for Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film ‘Drishyam 2’ was unveiled by the makers yesterday, movie buffs had many good things to say about the riveting sneak-peek for the Hindi remake of Malayalam movie ‘Drishyam 2’. Akshaye Khanna’s casting as a brilliant cop is also being regarded as the sequel’s X-factor and a formidable addition.

It seems that all these factors will contribute positively to the theatrical performance of ‘Drishyam 2’ with the hope that the highly anticipated sequel will once again overcome the dreaded post-pandemic remake syndrome that has affected the Hindi film industry of late.

However, despite all the positives for ‘Drishyam 2’, there is one new factor / addition related to the sequel which wasn’t there in the parent Hindi film ‘Drishyam’ and which might prove to be a dampener and even unfavourable for the sequel. We’re talking about the director of the upcoming movie ‘Drishyam 2’.

Many of you might already know that Ajay Devgn starrer ‘Drishyam’ was helmed by late filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, who had deftly executed the subject with a complex narrative and a hair-raising climactic revelation.

On the other hand, the sequel ‘Drishyam 2’ has been directed by a relatively new filmmaker Abhishek Pathak, whose last film was the social comedy ‘Ujda Chaman’. Unfortunately, ‘Ujda Chaman’ received rather mixed feedback from the audiences and an insipid box-office response. Nevertheless, it was a decent feature film directorial debut.

But the question is: Has Abhishek Pathak handled the remake for such a cult film with the required adeptness as done previously by Nishikant Kamat and the parent film’s helmer Jeethu Joseph? The trailer and the terrific cast have given the right vibes until now and the hope that ‘Drishyam 2′ will turn out to be a box-office hit besides garnering critical acclaim like its predecessors.

Another favourable point in Abhishek Pathak’s favour is that the young filmmaker had also produced the first film ‘Drishyam’ (Hindi remake). So, he most probably understands the heart and soul of the film. However, the final verdict will be out when ‘Drishyam 2’ releases in theatres on 18th November.

Moreover, we don’t think any new filmmaker does not have the potential to deliver a well-made and successful film. The best example is that of Ashutosh Gowariker, who had directed the Oscar-nominated film ‘Lagaan’ after helming ‘Baazi’ and ‘Pehla Nasha’ (decent efforts but a far-cry from Lagaan).

‘Drishyam 2’ will take place a few years after the incredible events of the first film. The basic plot would ostensibly revolve around Vijay Salgaonkar’s (Ajay Devgn) family, who is still living under the fear of the impending consequences of the police investigation for the senior cop’s (Tabu) missing son. When the investigation comes back again to haunt his family, the protagonist tries to deal with the situation with his sharp intellect to protect his family.
