After garnering widespread acclaim from audiences and critics in India, the hard-hitting legal drama ‘Jai Bhim’ is now geared up to weave its magic on international viewers. ‘Jai Bhim’ has bagged the honors of getting nominated for the 2022 edition of the prestigious Golden Globes awards in the non-English language film category.
As per the official website of Golden Globe, ‘Jai Bhim’ was submitted along with other Indian films namely Shoojit Sircar’s ‘Sardar Udham’, Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan’s ‘Bahattar Hoorain’, Vinothraj P S’s ‘Pebbles’, ‘Portraits, The’, and Manilal P.M’s ‘Yet Another River’.
Previously, only a handful of Indian films had been nominated for the Golden Globes award in the ‘Best Picture – Foreign Language’ category. They were Satyajit Ray’s ‘The World of Apu’, Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ in 1983, Mira Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ in 1989, and another of Mira Nair’s directorial ‘Monsoon Wedding’ in the year 2002.
However, only one film out of these was able to win the Golden Globe in the foreign film category. It was the Ben Kingsley starrer period biographical movie ‘Gandhi’. Besides, V. Shantaram’s ‘Do Ankhen Barah Haath’ had won the Samuel Goldwyn International Award.
‘Jai Bhim’ has recently also achieved the feat of becoming the highest-rated Indian movie on IMDb amongst the list of top-rated movies from across the world. It has outranked two legendary Hollywood movies – the cult prison drama ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and the Oscar Award-winning film ‘The Godfather’.
Directed by T. J. Gnanavel, ‘Jai Bhim’ is an intense courtroom investigative drama that starts off with the story of a man from a primitive tribal community who is accused of stealing from an affluent house. Thereafter, he is taken into police custody and eventually goes missing. The man’s pregnant wife takes the help of an upright High Court advocate Chandru (Suriya) to find her missing husband. How the lawyer fights for the justice of the tribal couple, forms the rest of the film’s plot.
Whether ‘Jai Bhim’ can become the second Indian movie after ‘Gandhi’ to win the Golden Globe foreign film award can only be known on 9th January 2022 – the scheduled date for the presentation of the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Our hopes and expectations are certainly high for this one.
