This year, the Bengali industry is seeing some big changes. From overly successful films to underperformers, that has been the story of 2024.
One of the most successful films of the year is Bohurupi. The film not only achieved domestic success but also gained pan-Indian recognition. Grossing ₹17.25 crore during the puja season, it’s a milestone that will be remembered for a long time.
But now, that sweet success story is fading.
It’s all about Khadaan now.
The storyline looks promising. Khadaan takes us back to 1997, where Shyam, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, rises from being a laborer to a coal syndicate kingpin with the cunning aid of his friend Mohan. While Shyam becomes a savior for the adivasi laborers, his resistance to corruption clashes with powerful forces, landing him in jail—and mysteriously dead.
Fast-forward to 2024, Mohan is now an industrial tycoon offering Shyam’s son Madhu a spot in his empire. But Mohan’s son Makhan, seeing Madhu as a threat, sets the stage for a gripping power struggle.
Despite being a mass entertainer, Khadaan focuses heavily on its storyline, much like Bohurupi. And the numbers are already speaking volumes as Khadaan nears the ₹11 crore mark, making it the second biggest film of the year. The next goal is ₹17 crore.
Can it dethrone Bohurupi?
On paper, it can. With little competition and the New Year market around the corner, Khadaan has the perfect opportunity. While Bohurupi succeeded with its plot and execution, Khadaan holds the edge with its star cast.
Things look tight for now, but Khadaan might just turn the tables.
