A ridiculous excuse of a film released in 2017 – the adaptation of the anime, ‘Death Note’. A show recently got cancelled after only one season – the John Cho led ‘Cowboy Bebop’. A failed attempt at an MCU style team-up series in ‘The Defenders’ and an even bigger flop in ‘Iron Fist’. The aforementioned live-action adaptations seem to be pointing towards one answer – Netflix’s Hollywood department cannot be trusted to create any noteworthy live-action adaptations of anime or comic books.
Perhaps this article is a little late, considering that Netflix cancelled ‘Cowboy Bebop’ months ago – however, the streaming platform has multiple other live-action adaptations in the pipeline. And the OTT platform isn’t just sticking to manga or anime either – with the streaming conglomerate looking to adapt from major games as well. A few months ago, news broke that Netflix is planning to release a few new TV shows in collaboration with Ubisoft, a French video game company. They were planning to work on a few new web series, based on the brilliant gaming franchises – ‘Splinter Cell’, ‘Far Cry’ and ‘Blood Dragon’.
However, people more apprehensive about the upcoming live adaptations of these two brilliant animated series – ‘One Piece’ and ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’. Both shows have a huge fan following around the globe, so it make sense that Netflix is trying to capitalise on that popularity. The OTT platform has already made a few major changes to some of the characters in ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, while the introduction of ‘One Piece’s’ cast didn’t go as positively as Netflix thought it could have received. So rightfully, many people are apprehensive of these upcoming adaptaions especially after how Netflix treated the above mentioned ‘Cowboy Bebop’.
