Can OTT Save “Thalaivii” After A Poor Weekend At The Box Office?

Expectations were extremely high and sometimes when we expect a lot, things don’t work out well. If you wondering what we are talking about, then let us clear the air. We are talking about Kangana Ranaut’s brand new movie “Thalaivii”. “Thalaivii” was released on Friday, 10th September in theatres all around the country. The movie was released in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. Thalaivii opened up to great critics’ reviews and industry insiders were expecting a lot from the movie. But after a poor start on Day 1, things aren’t looking that great either after an entire weekend

Thalaivii didn’t release in various multiplex chains due to the issue of the movie releasing on OTT in a small period of time. But even then, local multiplexes all around did have Thalaivii running in screens, but even then the Hindi market collected poorly. Delhi NCR region, U.P. showed extremely poor business, and these were the ones that were expected to do well. Thalaivii in Hindi circuits collected 25 Lakhs on Friday, 30 lakhs on Saturday, and 45 lakhs on Sunday. This isn’t much when it is compared to the release of Bell Bottom on the first weekend.

Thalaivii’s only saving grace seems to be its release in Tamil. The movie comparatively has done better than the local Tamil release “Labaam”, which stars Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Hassan. The Tamil version collected somewhere around 2.75 crores from Tamil Nadu and other places, where the Tamil version was released. Surprisingly the mega-chains that refused to screen the movie, was seen screening the Tamil movie in a few selected outlets in Bangalore.

The Telugu version too didn’t see much of an increase over the weekend. It wasn’t enough to call it a success. Thalaivii’s Telugu earnings came from Nizam and Andhra regions and around 50 Lakhs came in over the period. Thalaivii was released in 250 locations for the Telugu version. The Telugu market was clearly owned by Seetimaar, so it was evident that people would be less interested in “Thalaivii”.

Now as far as total goes, the movie collected approximately 1.35 crores nationwide on Friday, 1.6 crores approximately on Saturday, and 1.8 crores approximately around Sunday. The entire collection by the end of the weekend stands somewhere at 4.75 crores approximately. Many thought that Thalaivii isn’t doing good because it hasn’t been released in the big multiplexes, but then if people were seriously interested, they would have flocked to the halls that were screening the movie. Sadly, even those didn’t see quite an influx of audience for “Thalaivii”.

So, the question comes back is it the appeal of the movie or the OTT deal that pushed back people from watching the movie in theatres. The Tamil version is the only hope currently for the movie and trade analysts are assuming since it is based on such a famous Tamil politician, the movie will do good in that region. But then again the question comes back, what was it that stopped people from watching the movie out in theatres? This can only be answered when Thalaivii drops on the OTT platform. This OTT factor now can be the major deal breaker for Kangana Ranaut’s “Thalaivii”.
