Tom Cruise starrer ‘Top Gun’ sequel ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was released in theatres including India on 27th May 2022. The movie was able to strike the right chords with the audiences and critics alike. Besides bagging the coveted Palme d’Or at Cannes 2022, it currently holds a highly impressive 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and the audience score is even higher at 99%. Moreover, its IMDb user rating as of now is 8.6/10.
On the commercial front, the aerial action-adventure film has been on a record-breaking spree ever since its release and has grossed over a whopping $1.37 billion at the box office worldwide until now. Currently, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is the thirteenth highest grossing movie of all time in the coveted list topped by James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ followed by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and Cameron’s ‘Titanic’.
At the international box-office, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is just behind the 2015 Marvel superhero movie ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, which had grossed more than $1.4 billion. Considering the rather insignificant difference, it looks like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will most likely surpass ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ in a matter of just a couple of weeks.
However, it would be interesting to see whether ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will be able to beat the first ‘Avengers’ movie which came out in the year 2012 and collected more than $1.5 billion at the box office globally. But to achieve that feat, the film would still need to collect around $14 million overall.
Helmed by Joseph Kosinski, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is set thirty years after the events of the 1986 parent film ‘Top Gun’ by Tony Scott. Tom Cruise is now a brave test pilot and a flight instructor. He trains a batch of Top Gun graduates for a special mission where he meets pilot trainee Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Miller), who is the son of Maverick’s best friend and former naval flight officer Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.
