You might already be aware that the 74th edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2021 is underway and will conclude on July 17, 2021. While all eyes will be on the festival’s top prize Palme d’Or, the prize winners for another coveted ‘Un Certain Regard’ section have recently been announced.
For those who do not know, the ‘Un Certain Regard’ has been an integral part of the renowned festival since the year 1978. The English translation for the category is “from another angle”. Every year, twenty films by emerging filmmakers are presented in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ festival segment.
This year, the opening film for this section was Arthur Harari’s ‘This year, three Indian films namely ‘Invisible Demons’, ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing’, and ‘Eka’ were part of Cannes 2021. We are hopeful that more suc’. And this year’s top prize under the section has been awarded to a Russian drama film namely ‘Unclenching the Fists’ (Razzhimaja kulaki) helmed by Kira Kovalenko. The film follows the story of a girl named Ada, who struggles to escape from her life in a small Russian town.
Besides the top prize, there were other films as well which impressed the jury. The Jury prize was won by an Austrian drama film ‘Great Freedom’ directed by Sebastian Meise. While the Ensemble prize was bagged by a French film ‘Good Mother’ (Bonne mère). Further, the Prize of Originality, Courage Prize, and Special Mention prizes were awarded to ‘Lamb’, ‘La Civil’, and ‘Prayers for the Stolen’, respectively.
Interestingly, in the year 2015, two Indian films not just competed under the Un Certain Regard category but also won the Prix avenir prometteur awards. One of these Indian films was the hard-hitting drama ‘Masaan’ directed by Neeraj Ghaywan that featured Vicky Kaushal, Richa Chadha, Shweta Tripathi, and Sanjay Mishra amongst other actors. The second Indian film was Gurvinder Singh’s Punjabi film ‘Chauthi Koot’. The film revolved around life in rural Punjab of the 1980s before and after Operation Blue Star.
This year, three Indian films namely ‘Invisible Demons’, ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing’, and ‘Eka’ were part of Cannes 2021. We are hopeful that more such films from both established and budding Indian filmmakers made in the near future will be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and make the country proud again.
