Advertisement is a very important aspect for any show, especially award shows where advertisements play a significant role. Social media is crucial in this regard, and in this era, we see an enormous rise in the influencer population.
Major influencers are slowly but surely integrating with mainstream events. The Oscars have been doing this for a long time, and being the biggest and most prestigious award show, it is quite understandable.
However, recent trends show that these events are saturating fans with a plethora of influencers. This was particularly evident at the recent Cannes festival, where there was a wave of Indian influencers.
Cannes provides exposure to films, and after 30 long years, one Indian film found its place in the lineup, which is practically a shame for the festival. India’s ability to produce high-quality films is impeccable, but Cannes has been avoiding the nation for a very long time.
When they finally decided that India was “good” enough for the festival, the film they picked was quite questionable. The major problem arises with how Cannes avoided Indian filmmakers and instead invited a plethora of influencers and designers.
This is definitely a tremendous opportunity for the creators, and you can’t really blame them. This sort of exposure can change their lives, but one can question how necessary it is.
For instance, Raj Shamani and Sharan Hegde, though fantastic individuals, have barely any connection to the film industry. If some hardworking or underrated filmmaker, not so mainstream, were invited to the event, even they would have been proud.
Even rapper King was invited to the event, who similarly has very little connection with the industry altogether. This step is definitely very odd and peculiar, and Cannes could have done something way better with it.
Now, you can’t really blame the influencers, they were invited guests and this is definitely a big event in their lives as well. But Cannes should be more careful about this whole incident, they can think about the target audience in a better way.
