CAUTION!! You Might Be Caught In This Vicious Circle Of OTTs

What was the last thing you watched on an OTT platform? And before that? Do you observe a pattern there? In case you didn’t, have a look at the home page of the platform you are subscribed to. You are bound to notice that the content up there somewhat belongs to one or two particular genres.

The algorithm used by almost every video streaming service is similar and recommends shows or movies based on the things you watch. While this might not sound problematic at first but after a little while you end up watching similar type of content again and again. This eventually limits you to one or two categories making you miss out on a lot of good content.

This recommendation system is flawed in the sense that it rarely suggests anything else until you search for it exclusively. And that leads you directly into the vicious circle of these OTT platforms. There is an urgent need to remedy this in order to have a better viewing experience. An updated algorithm that would at times suggest something different from the frequently watched category is the need of the hour.

The OTT platforms are well equipped with resources and personnel, who on the basis of behavioural studies can devise newer and better strategies for optimum utilisation of the services provided by the platforms. This would not only be useful for the consumers but also beneficial for the filmmakers and producers who put their blood and sweat in their projects but often go unnoticed.

The rectification though is expected from the streaming platforms, we ourselves can also diversify our recommendation list by watching something other than the regularly preferred genre. So, until the OTT giants come up with something, this seems to be the way forward.
