The Central Board of Film Certification in India has seen many changes. Earlier there used to be no intimacy in the films. Now, we have semi porn films like Julie 2 and whatnot.
But, the perception towards CBFC is more or less the same.
Sean Baker’s dark comedy Anora, starring Mikey Madison and Mark Eidelstein, was set to release in Indian theatres this Friday, but plans have shifted.
Universal Pictures India decided to pull the film from its theatrical release, opting to launch it on an OTT platform later this month instead. Reports from Mid-Day suggest that this move was made to avoid censorship issues with CBFC. Somehow the makers assumed that this issue would be there.
The film has a lot of bold content and was not submitted for CBFC certification due to fears of extensive cuts, especially with scenes involving nudity. According to a source from Universal Pictures, the studio felt that editing or censoring certain scenes would compromise director Sean Baker’s vision and impact how the film tackles sensitive social themes.
The decision to move Anora to a digital release was made to ensure that audiences could watch the film in its original form, honouring the director’s creative intentions.
In the U.S., Anora was released in theatres last month and will be available worldwide on Hulu by the end of November. In India, Lionsgate may host the film as a pay-per-view option, but it could also arrive on JioCinema depending on the Hulu-Hotstar partnership. This shift will let Indian viewers experience Baker’s acclaimed work without compromises.
