A preview teaser from ‘Chaalchitra Ekhon’ has been released now. The movie is directed by Anjan Dutta and he is also playing an important role in it. ‘Chaalchitra Ekhon’ is the modern revision to the 1981 classic ‘Chaalchitra’ by Mrinal Sen and acts as a tribute film.
‘Chaalchitra’ told the story of a young writer who got a break from an elderly editor who tells him to write a newsy and yet intimate story about the middle class problems and dilemmas in two days. The writer is initially overjoyed and tries to find a story but is soon exhausted and cannot find anything to write. The search goes on and finally he dreams a very furious dream about his condition. When he next meets with the editor, things do not go on as planned. The role of the editor was played by the iconic Utpal Dutta and the role of the journalist was played by Anjan Dutta himself.
Chaalchitra Ekhon, meanwhile, tells the story of how Anjan and Mrinal Sen met and how the filmmaker influenced young Anjan. There is a great flux of such tribute films coming all around. With Satyajit Ray there was the critically acclaimed ‘Aparajito’. Uttam Kumar has had multiple biopics and now it goes on with Mrinal Sen. Mrinal Sen’s ‘Kharij’ got a sequel ‘Palan’, directed by Koushik Ganguly. Those two movies starred Anjan Dutta too. Now let’s see what he does with his own story told in his own direction.
This is indeed a very risky project because there is so much saturation of these types of films, that for audiences outside the state there might not be interest in the movie at all. Chaalchitra Ekhon, however, instills nostalgia and has much anticipation in the city areas. The movie will release in select theaters on the 10th of May and will premiere digitally on Hoichoi.
