There are just a few months left for the 2024 edition of the Academy Awards, whose verdict will be out on 10th March 2024. Recently, the Academy revealed a list of the eligible films for Oscars 2024 including eligible titles for the ‘International Feature Film’ category from 88 countries.
Many acclaimed titles made it to the Oscars 2024 ‘International Feature Film’ eligible films list. The list includes several films from across the globe such as the Indian survival drama ‘2018’, Chinese sci-fi flick ‘The Wandering Earth 2’, the Finnish comedy drama ‘Fallen Leaves’, the French culinary romantic drama ‘The Taste of Things’, and the German drama ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’, amongst others. The same list also included a British film called ‘The Zone of Interest’ – UK’s official Oscar entry.
In a rather interestingly related development, the Los Angeles Film Critics Awards (LAFCA) has just announced its list of winners for its 2023 edition. Formidable Oscar contender ‘Oppenheimer’ didn’t win the ‘Bets Picture’ award, but it was a runner-up. And the film which has beaten Christopher Nolan’s widely acclaimed film is Jonathan Glazer’s historical drama ‘The Zone of Interest’.
‘The Zone of Interest’ has not just bagged the ‘Best Picture’ award but also the ‘Best Director’ award for Jonathan Glazer. In a way, the film has suddenly become a strong Oscar contender for the Oscars 2024 ‘International Feature Film’ category. And there is another solid reason for the same.
The Los Angeles Film Critics Awards is a time-tested trend indicator for the Academy Awards aka Oscars. As per a relevant stat, since the year 2000, five ‘Best Picture’ winning films at LAFCA went on to win the ‘Best Picture’ Oscars. Those films were “The Hurt Locker”. “Spotlight”, “Moonlight”, “Parasite” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” It’s a general trend which might get replicated in other categories including ‘Best International Film’ also.
Considering the above trend, it looks like the United Kingdom has brightened its chances for an Oscar win for its film ‘The Zone of Interest’ in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category.
