Netflix is going strong with its agenda of bringing more and more stories that tell about the various achievements women have made, in different places. Now to add to this, Netflix is bringing to it’s viewers a brand new feature film. The feature film will tell a story about a place that hasn’t been in the limelight much and to do that Netflix has joined hands with some women, who are deemed as powerhouses in the industry.
Netflix has teamed up with Charlize Theron’s production house, Denver & Delilah Productions for a movie that is based around four strong women and their struggles of being female surfers in a world dominated by men. The movie is based around and inspired by the article released in New York Times titled “The Fight for Gender Equality in One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth” by Daniel Duane. It focuses on the stories of inequality faced by surfers Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms, and Keala Kennelly.
The movie will focus on the story of these four women along with the stories in the articles. The movie will show how these four women bond with each other and also fight for equality in the sports, as they surf in some of the most dangerous surfing spots and do their best to take part in big wave contests all over.
It is to be mentioned that Surfing is one such sport that is considered to be highly and extremely male dominated. Out of 100 percent, only 20-30 percent of the sports population is now somehow female. It is said that even big wave contests don’t take in many female contestants and sometimes they even avoid it, but with time things are changing. Even though big wave female surfers are less, more and more are coming out and competing in the contests and even though the inequality is highly visible, female surfers now have successfully made their mark in the sports.
Along with Charlize Theron, Niki Caro, director of Disney’s live action film “Mulan” has also joined the team for the movie as the director for the movie. Besides Mulan, Caro has also directed movies like MacFarland, The Zookeeper’s Wife, Whale Rider among others. . Becky Johnston is onboard as the screenplay writer for the movie.
Going with the theme of the movie and the strong and powerful women that are onboard the movie, Netflix definitely seems to be doing a phenomenal job in bringing out stories that can empower and motivate women everywhere. Also, with a movie with this topic, this will definitely be a unique film to look out for.
