This was the era when A24 was building themselves, and as they partnered up with Oscar Isaac, it gave them a boost in terms of making a name. Especially with elements like science fiction and dystopian thriller, it was A24’s original content.
Released in 2014, it provided direction for science fiction films, especially for those who love to play with the minds of the audience.
Talking about the basic plot of the film, “Ex Machina” revolves around a young programmer named Caleb who wins a competition to spend a week at the secluded estate of his company’s CEO, Nathan.
Upon arrival, Caleb learns that he is to participate in an experiment involving a highly advanced humanoid robot named Ava. As Caleb interacts with Ava, he begins to question the true nature of her consciousness and emotions.
As the experiment progresses, Caleb’s perceptions of reality and trust in Nathan are tested, leading to a tense and thought-provoking exploration of artificial intelligence, ethics, and human nature.
The film not only hits the sci-fi spots correctly, it also manages to surprise the audience time and time again. With the great writing of Garland, “Ex Machina” is one of those films which you will go back to quite frequently, especially stacked with critical and general appreciation. This is a fun watch.
Though the film has its fair share of surprises, Oscar Isaac won’t be one of them as he excels in his role. Playing Nathan, the brilliant yet enigmatic CEO of a tech company, Isaac brings depth to the character.
Domhnall Gleeson is equally compelling as Caleb, a young programmer caught in Nathan’s web of intrigue. Alicia Vikander shines as Ava, the AI with a mesmerizing blend of innocence and intelligence. Together, they create a captivating and thought-provoking dynamic on screen.
And for those who are lovers of visual satisfaction, the film hits all the right spots; it is definitely one of the very best in its class. The whole ambiance is also tight, and as a fan, you will love it.
Though it has its fair share of flaws, they are pretty ignorable and will probably go unnoticed. The pacing might seem a bit off for some viewers, but you can’t really please everyone. However, there aren’t many complaints anyway.
And here comes the question, where to stream “Ex Machina”? Netflix is your destination. Though Prime Video also streams it, you need to spare ₹99 to actually stream this.
