The latest Netflix Global Top 10 Non-English Films list is nothing less than a tale of surprises and contradictions when it comes to Indian cinema. ‘Chhaava’, the historical epic starring Vicky Kaushal, has slipped off the list after a promising run for two weeks. Meanwhile ‘Court: State Vs A Nobody’ holds strong for third consecutive week.
But that’s not the most surprising part, it’s what comes next. Netflix’s latest original Indian film ‘Jewel Thief – The Heist Begins’ has debuted at an impressive No. 3, despite scathing reviews. But to be honest it’s not that surprising and we will get it that later in this article. But yes this whole thing does reveals the unpredictable dynamics of global streaming audiences and raises questions about what really drives viewership.
As for ‘Chhaava’ and ‘Court’, hardly would have anyone thought that it would be the former to make an exit from the list while the latter stays. ‘Chhaava’ was a blockbuster in theatres, had a strong cultural resonance, with grand visuals, rich narrative and amazing performances yet it couldn’t manage to hold its position on the Netflix charts. Now this maybe because fresher releases felt more attractive to the viewers as Netflix’s algorithm is often seen favouring them or maybe the film was too rooted historically and culturally to have a universal appeal.
But then there’s the Telugu courtroom drama ’Court: State Vs A Nobody’ that continues to defy expectations with 1.4 million views in its consecutive third week in the list. Talking about theme, this film is about the fight against corrupt system which easily resonates globally. Moreover, ‘Court’s presence in the list longer than ‘Chhaava’ suggests how compelling storytelling can outshine star power or big budgets and also be more appealing to audience across borders.
Coming to the surprise entry, ‘Jewel Thief – The Heist Begins’, the Saif Ali Khan-Jaideep Ahlawat starrer has clocked 7.8 million views in just three days of its debut on Netflix. Apparently the shitty reviews didn’t affect the film much. Looks like once again glossy visuals and masala entertainment has trumped the narrative flaws and brought to surface the hard truth: while you might be looking for substance, there will be many others wishing to escape the mundane and be lost in a glamorous no-brainer. Also, it’s a new Netflix original and the platform’s algorithm would definitely be biased in its favor.
This whole scenario shows a broader trend where to be successful and find a worldwide audience on streaming platforms there must be a balance struck between cultural relevance, universal themes, and sheer watchability. ‘Court’ has the theme, ‘Jewel Thief’ rides on sheen and ‘Chhaava’ exit shows how culture often has its boundaries. In the end it’s all about striking the right cords and let the melody do its job.
