Christian Bale’s ‘Amsterdam’ A Failure Even Before Its Release

Christian Bale’s ‘Amsterdam’ A Failure Even Before Its Release

David O. Russell’s upcoming period mystery comedy thriller movie ‘Amsterdam’ is set to release in theatres on 7th October. The star-studded movie features a truly ensemble cast which could give a run for their money to Wes Anderson and Rian Johnson’s upcoming ventures ‘Asteroid City’ and ‘Knives Out 2’, respectively.

‘Amsterdam’ features Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, alongside Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldana, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, Taylor Swift, and the legendary Robert De Niro, amongst others. But will it be enough for the film to succeed?

David O. Russell is a kind of filmmaker who has been extremely picky with his directorial feature film projects, and which has earned him a lot of credibility. Previously, he has directed films like the widely admired boxing drama ‘The Fighter’, the critically acclaimed romantic dramedy ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and the award-winning dark comedy crime film ‘American Hustle’.

But it seems that David O. Russell’s impeccable track record will be broken with his next film ‘Amsterdam’. Because the film has not been received well by the majority of the critics. It has received a poor critics’ score of just 25% on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 reviews.

Moreover, ‘Amsterdam’ presently holds an underwhelming score of 49/100 on Metacritic, indicating ‘mixed or average’ reviews. And on IMDb, the film has been given a deplorable user rating of 5.7/10 although the number of votes is just around 400 as of now.

So, overall, David O. Russell’s ‘Amsterdam’ has apparently failed to impress most of the critics and the reviews are bound to adversely affect the film’s box office prospects. It would be interesting to see whether the film will be able recover its $80 million budget from its theatrical revenues. Let’s see if the audiences’ viewpoint differs from critics in this case.

Previously, ‘Amsterdam’ was supposed to release alongside Marvel’s highly anticipated superhero movie ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ on 4th November. However, the makers preponed it for a 7th October release for good. Considering its discouraging reviews and rather niche audience, God knows what would have happened to the film in case it clashed with the ‘Black Panther’ sequel.

Based on the 1933 political conspiracy in the US – ‘Business Plot’, Amsterdam’s plot revolves around a doctor named Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale), a nurse Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie) and a lawyer Harold Woodsman (John David Washington) who become prime suspects in a US Senator’s murder.
