The stage is set! People celebrate Christmas to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. But this festive season is also considered a treat for cinephiles globally. It serves as the perfect release window for many big-budget flicks. And this year’s Christmas season also has a lot to offer to the viewers. In India, “the most wonderful time of the year” becomes highly bankable for Bollywood movies. Just ask Aamir Khan!
We witness loads of movies hitting the theatres during the Christmas season every year. And it always ends in a bloodbath. Some movies rise while others get buried under the weight of their successful competitors. This year’s Christmas is all set to repeat history. The Indian box office will become a warzone for many films in December 2022! Here’s how!
Rohit Shetty’s much-awaited comedy-drama, Cirkus, will hit the big screens on December 23, It will face direct competition from Vikas Bahl’s Ganapath. However, the former film looks like the obvious winner of this faceoff. Any person with even a little knowledge of movies can predict this thing. Shetty knows how to lure masses into the theatres. Plus, his last collaboration with Ranveer Singh, Simmba, was a gigantic hit. The masala entertainer earned more than 400 crores at the box office. Bollywood fans are thrilled about the return of this actor-director duo. And this scenario may help Cirkus in rising to the top.
Going one-on-one with Cirkus, we have Tiger Shroff’s Ganapath. The Baaghi fame is not going through an ecstatic time these days. His last project, Heropanti 2, got butchered by audiences and critics both. As a result, the sequel tanked, earning only 35 crores against its 70-crore budget. Although, Ganapath may benefit from the reunion of Shroff and Kriti Sanon. They both launched their careers in Bollywood through Sabbir Khan’s Heropanti (2014). Still, the chances of Ganapath defeating Cirkus are very low.
Here comes the big surprise! Both Cirkus and Ganapath have about a week only to perform well in theatres as Salman Khan’s Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali will release on December 30.
How about we shift our focus towards Hollywood movies? James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water will premiere worldwide on December 16. The highly-anticipated Avatar sequel will make things hard for all the upcoming Bollywood flicks mentioned above. The first film (2009) earned more than $2.8 billion worldwide. It received praises for its groundbreaking visuals, James Horner’s score, and outstanding performances. And the hype behind its forthcoming sequel is too big to be ignored.
Then, we have Shazam! Fury of the Gods, dropping in theatres five days after the arrival of Avatar 2. It is one of the rare DCEU projects which are free from any sort of controversy. However, the only thing that works against this sequel is its lack of popularity in India. That’s why it may fail at collecting good figures in the country. But it may affect the collections of its rivals. Stay tuned for more updates.
