The highly-rated science fiction animated series ‘Rick and Morty’ recently dropped a 14-second live-action clip featuring ‘Back to the Future’ star Christopher Lloyd as the mad scientist Rick along with Jaeden Martell as his grandson Morty. The clip was launched by Adult Swim as the fifth season of ‘Rick and Morty’ is inching closer towards its finale.
The inclusion of Christopher Lloyd as Rick – the mad genius scientist makes complete sense because of two valid reasons. First is that the ‘Rick and Morty’ animated series draws its inspiration from Robert Zemeckis’ cult time-travel franchise ‘Back to the Future’.
Rick’s character is hugely reminiscent of Llyod’s character from the ‘Back to the Future’ film ‘Doctor Emmett “Doc” Brown’. The films featured Christopher Lloyd as the Einstein(ish) scientist and also starred Michael J. Fox as his grandson-like friend. In fact, the series is said to have its roots in an animated short parody film of ‘Back to the Future’. Eventually, however, the series has successfully charted its own course and independent cult following.
The second reason for the rationality behind Christopher Lloyd’s casting in the short clip is the actor’s self-professed willingness and his penchant for the ‘Rick and Morty’ series. Regarding his possible association with the animated show, Lloyd had previously told Phoenix New Times that “I don’t follow it closely, but I’ve seen a few episodes and I gotta tell you, I think it’s a lot of fun. I know it’s some kind of parody of Doc and Marty. I’d like to, of course. I think it’s really fun.”
Although Llyod’s appearance in the clip might not be a sure-shot indication that he might appear in some capacity in the remaining episodes of ‘Rick and Morty’. It seems to be more like a marketing strategy by the makers of the show or maybe it’s a way to gauge the audiences’ reaction to Llyod’s possible future appearance in ‘Rick and Morty’ series.
Nevertheless, it’s high time that Christopher Lloyd should be cast as Rick in perhaps a live-action version of the animated series ‘Rick and Morty’, even if it’s just for a few episodes. This dream crossover is what diehard fans of ‘Back to the Future’ films and ‘Rick and Morty’ series earnestly hope for. And that certainly includes us.
