Christopher Nolan’s upcoming feature adaptation of The Odyssey has received a new production update. The highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem follows the story of the Greek hero Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his journey home after the Trojan War.
According to Variety, Nolan’s next project will be partly filmed in Sicily. Why? Scholars suggest that Sicily was one of the primary locations for Odysseus’ wanderings in Homer’s poem. Filming will take place on the island of Favignana, also known as “Goat Island,” which is part of the Egadi archipelago off Sicily’s northwest coast.
Filming is set to begin in Sicily in approximately two months. The chosen island is believed to be the location where Homer imagined Odysseus and his companions making landfall, hunting goats for food, and replenishing their supplies.
In addition to Favignana Island, parts of Nolan’s The Odyssey will also be shot in Sicily’s Aeolian Islands. Other filming locations for the highly anticipated epic include Morocco and the United Kingdom.
Nolan is reportedly utilising the latest IMAX film technology to shoot the movie, which is being described as a groundbreaking revolution in cinema. He is co-producing the film with his wife, Emma Thomas, under their Syncopy banner for Universal.
Cast members that have been finalised for The Odyssey so far are Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. Though, we don’t know who will play which role. Stay tuned for more updates.
