Two Malayalam movies released two days before are still receiving good sound of appreciation and responses. ‘Churul’ and ‘Kattappaadathe Manthrikan’ are two extremities of the same line which have different worlds in storytelling.
‘Churul’ (Eng. A twisted loop) is a mystery drama that is based on the social issue of stratification of reserved communities set up in the historic period of Kerala. The flick is written and directed by Arun J Mohan with being presented and produced by Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC). The cinematography is handled by Praveen Chakrapani and editing is done by Davis Manuel. The movie features the actors Pramod Veliyanad, Rahul Rajagopal, Rajesh Sharma, and Kalabhavan Jinto in important roles. The story is about the murder of a retired police officer and follows the events of Sathyan, who confesses to being the murderer, and his non-fruitful backstory. The narrative has a scrupulous blend of characters as well as plot-driven kind and execution by the technical labour is brilliant.
The performances of the listed actors are subtle and to the point. Composition by Madhu Paul is haunting and filling the element of suspense However, its theatrical success is a query as there are no established unique selling features, and the second reason the movie is more academic than entertaining. But there is a hope that the audience would like to follow the content behind the screen.
‘Kattappadathe Manthrikan’ (Eng. The magician of Kattappaadam) is more of a comedy family-drama entertainer which is set up in ‘Kattappaadam’, a fictional village somewhere in Kerala talks about the humour narrative of family conflicts and human relationships. The movie is edited, written, and directed by Faisal Hussain, popular for making short films and documentaries. It is produced by Najeeb Amana for the Al Amana Productions. The movie features an ensemble cast of actors Vinod Kovoor, Sumith M B, and Farooq Malappuram in lead roles and actors Shivaji Guruvayoor, Neema Mathew, Priya Sreejith, Jayan Karanthoor, Shukoor Vakeel, Thejas, Kamal Varadoor, Salahu Rahman, Vishnu, Jishnu, Suresh Kanav, and Nasser Chemmat being its supporting characters respectively.
The music is composed by Sibu Sukumaran and Mithulesh Cholakkal. The main factor in watching the movie will be its cast who are profound in convincing humour and able to connect with the audience. Above all, it can have a chance to be an out-and-out laughter riot.
