This is a very ambitious project for the Russo Brothers, Citadel, to bring forth a global rethink of storytelling in terms of interlinked spy-thriller programs in multiple languages and cultures. As exciting as the idea sounds, there seems to be a trend among the fans who grow increasingly irritated by the convolutions of the franchise’s chronologies, not to mention the spin-offs in Italy, India, and many more countries, where people find it difficult to understand connections between numerous shows, not to mention plots and characters that overlap between them.
Citadel: In the case of this film, the timeline between 1992 and 2000 throws much deeper confusions on Honey Bunny. The characters’ missions when in 1992 definitely make it interesting, but where personal lives become emphasized is during the same period when Honey fights to prevent her daughter from getting away with dangerous people. So, thus this also makes it difficult to bring out how all this is tied together in the movie.
Its lead series, this time with Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra, brings to life the mysterious secret organization Citadel. The brand burst out after the premiere with the coming out of Citadel: Honey Bunny-an Indian spin-off with the leading act to feature Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan. The series takes off on two different timelines in 1992 and 2000 and is an origin story to the lead characters opening theaters during November 2024. To most though, it is confusing since no one would know how that integrates into the wide view of the Citadel universe.
Their non-linear storyline also is the biggest weakness of the franchise for its fans. The events presented in one series affect the action in the other series, and each spin-off explores different time periods and locations. For example, the Indian adaptation introduces new characters and motifs that are really hard to place inside the storyline since it jumps between decades. Although the ambition is there, viewers trying to keep up may be intimidated by this seemingly disjointed approach.
While the storytelling of Citadel across cultures is innovative, critics state that it compromises the coherence of storytelling. This made the franchise commitment to link all its plotlines into interrelated ones create a mess of overcomplicated story arcs. The fans are left with more questions than the answers: With which agency does each agency affiliate? How would the choice of character impact the spin-offs upcoming? Casual viewers not prepared to slog into the franchise’s more complex backstory may grow weary of the lack of explicit, readily apparent connections between episodes.
Finally, while the Citadel franchise is commendably targeted, it might be too much to handle with convoluted timelines and complex storylines. The story weavers might need to provide less ambiguous helps to those narratives or even its secondary tales that are easier to follow if they want the show to engage more audience in the long term. Global storytelling has to catch up with coherence in this changing universe.
