Filmmaker Alex Garland has stated that he will be taking voluntary retirement from filmmaking after his decade-long journey and he does not want to return to it anytime soon. He says that he has fallen out of love with cinema and does not want to feel like a fraud anymore.
It is indeed a great loss in the world of cinema if he never directs again. But hopefully that is less likely to happen. It came as shocking news for the fans of Garland when he talked about stepping back from the camera for the time being in a recent interview. But he had been hinting at this for quite some time now.
Garland wrote and directed the film ‘Ex Machina’ in 2014, 10 years from now, and it went on to be a very popular movie with a huge fan base. His films like ‘Annihilation’ and ‘Men’ were popular and critically acclaimed as well. His upcoming film ‘Civil War’ is one of the most anticipated films of the year and has a cast of actors like Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura and many others. The action drama is set in a dystopian world and tells the story of the fictionalized Second American Civil War and how the country gets torn by the consequences of it. The movie is releasing on the 12th of April.
About taking his retirement, Alex Garland has said, “Nothing’s changed. I’m in a very similar state. I’m not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future.” He added, “I’m tired of feeling like a fraud. I’ve got so many other reasons to feel like a fraud, I don’t need to add to it in a structural way with my job.”
