A24 is on a victory lap in the box office, marking a first in their history. However, overall, this battle was weak, especially from a business standpoint for theaters. Despite some major titles making it to the list, their performance isn’t the strongest, and their long theatrical run is affecting the numbers.
In terms of new releases, there is an absence of many fresh names, especially among the big titles. Additionally, this week was dominated by sequels, with four titles from the top five films being sequels, making it a bit mundane.
At the top spot, Civil War climbs, becoming the first A24 film to reach the top box-office spot with $25.7 million. With better advertisement, the film could have reached better numbers, but being an A24 film, that is out of the question.
Following Civil War is Godzilla X Kong, with the sequel grossing the $157.9 million mark in the box office. The weekend box office for this title was around $15.5 million, seeing a 50% drop from the previous weekend but still holding strong. Additionally, as it looks for a global extension, the weekend collection might not drop down that massively.
Next in line are titles such as Ghostbusters Frozen Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Dune Part Two, with collections of $5.8 million, $5.5 million, and $4.3 million respectively.
Among the best of the rest is Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, which is still garnering attention at the box office, grossing $4.1 million, followed by The First Omen, which grossed $3.8 million.
