Ok let’s get right into it. We have been hearing rumors and reading reports of ‘Hannibal’ actor, Mads Mikkelsen having gone into early talks with Warner Bros. to portray the villain Gellert Grindelwald in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise, which was previously played by Johnny Depp. According to mugglenet.com (A Harry Potter exclusive fansite), a source from inside the production of Fantastic Beasts 3 have confirmed that Mikkelsen will indeed take the role. We don’t know the credibility of the source, but since this is the first report of a confirmation, we are reporting about the report.
Johnny Depp was asked to leave the role by the production house after he lost the libel case against The Sun, which Depp did without much incident, except for a letter addressing the general public. Since Depp had only done one scene in the film, it should be pretty easy to simply replace the actor with Mikkelson and continue on with the shooting of the film without much issues (If Mikkelson is indeed portraying the antagonist). This way, they can even complete the film production and finish the film, getting it ready for its previous 2021 release date; that is if there are no changes in the script trying to explain away the sudden change in the character’s facial structure.
Mads Mikkelsen has portrayed a variety of roles on screen, his most iconic being the (in)famous titular character in the psychological crime drama television series, ‘Hannibal’. He came to prominence in the 2006 James Bond film ‘Casino Royale’ portraying the main Bond villain, Le Chiffre. The Danish actor has gone on to portray multiple complex characters and it is no surprise that he was David Yates’ (the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise director) first choice.
