Superstar Vijay’s Master has weathered the coronavirus pandemic and will finally be opening in theaters world wide in two days. The film will be released in multiple languages simultaneously – in Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu in over 500 theaters around the country. What’s more, the Tamil Nadu State Government had even agreed to allow 100% attendance in cinema halls. Obviously this last issue has been a point of contention among multiple parties.
Obviously, due to the sudden outbreak of the coronavirus around the globe (and in India), multiple big budget films were put on hold which included the expected 2020 early-summer blockbuster Master. It obviously couldn’t meet its 9th April release date and the production house of the film has been pressured from multiple fronts regarding its release.
Major OTTs wanted to buy the distribution rights for Master, while theaters wanted the production house to wait out the pandemic and release the film properly in theaters, hopefully at max occupancy. There were multiple fans on the fence about this, as many wanted to see Master as soon as possible, while the rest wanted to wait for the theaters to open for the full “Superstar” experience. The cinema owners eventually won out, with theaters opening in India, a couple of months ago. In December 2020, the film producers announced that the movie will drop one day before Pongal, in 2021.
This was all well and good, until Superstar Vijay himself went to meet with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to allow 100% attendance in theaters by the time Master rolls out as cinema owners were hit pretty hard by the (ongoing) pandemic and this film will help recuperate some of the losses they faced. The Tamil Nadu Government gave permission to allow the full occupancy, but this was swiftly met with resistance from both medical experts (both local and national) and the Central Government, as the number of Coivd-19 cases have been increasing recently, including in the state of Tamil Nadu. Eventually, The Central Government browbeat the Tamil Nadu government into reducing the allowed capacity back to 50%.
Master follows the clash of two teachers/ “Masters” – an alcohol addicted professor and a Juvenile home headmaster. The headmaster (portrayed by Vijay Sethupathi) is using the children from this institute for his own (vile) purposes while the new appointed teacher (portrayed by Vijay) is looking to stop him.
Master has undergone multiple ups and downs during the shoot – the pandemic, clashes between Vijay and his fans against BJP supporters, the aforementioned OTT pressures and income tax raid faced by the lead superstar while the movie shoot was ongoing. After all that, the movie will be releasing in a couple of days and we can’t wait for it to finally premiere.
The Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi starrer Master will be releasing in theaters around the globe on 13th January 2021 (the day before Pongal). Check out the trailer for Master down below:
