We don’t have fake critic quotes this time! Lionsgate has unveiled a new trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis which is free from fabricated critic quotes. Though, we do get a narrator this time.
On August 22, Lionsgate openly apologised after Megalopolis’ old trailer caught many people’s attention for using fake critic quotes. Fabricated reviews from esteemed critics, including Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris, implied that Coppola’s films initially met with mixed reactions, were destined to become timeless masterpieces.
The new trailer certainly looks much better and a little less confusing than the previous one. It shows Adam Driver’s Cesar Catilina, an idealist architect, controlling time and revealing his desire to rebuild New Rome as a sustainable megalopolis. However, his viewpoint clashes with the conservative Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito). Cicero’s daughter, Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), torn between her father’s influence and Cesar’s morals, embarks on a quest for personal fulfillment.
The film’s unconventional storytelling is so groundbreaking that it seems Lionsgate has completely lost its marketing compass. A proper trailer, just 22 days before release? Now that’s what we call a strategic masterstroke! Well done, Lionsgate!
Megalopolis premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The critical reception towards Coppola’s movie was highly polarising. While some critics praised the film for being audacious, ambitious, and creative, others had absolutely no idea what they watched at the premiere. Apart from Driver, Emmanuel, and Esposito, the film is brimmed with talents like Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter and Dustin Hoffman. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 27. Stay tuned for more updates. Check out the new trailer below!
